What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that are surgically implanted beneath the gumline and into the jawbone to replace the missing root structure of one or more teeth. Due to the biocompatible nature of the metal, they’re able to naturally fuse with the bone through a process called osseointegration. As a result, they form a stable, unwavering support system for any type of restoration, allowing our team to replace the entire structure of your missing tooth.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

- Consultation: Every dental implant treatment will begin with a consultation with Dr. Weedman and our phenomenal team. We’ll take X-rays and thoroughly examine your mouth and look over your medical and oral health history. Based on your case and our findings, we’ll be able to let you know whether dental implants are right for you and walk you through your treatment plan.
- Surgery: Our team works with leading dental implant experts for the surgical placement part of your treatment. We make sure to collaborate and coordinate with your placement specialist at every step of the way so you can enjoy a seamless and streamlined experience.
- Osseointegration: Following dental implant placement, osseointegration will occur over the following three to six months. This is when the implants will fuse with the jawbone. After this is complete, your specialist will contact us to begin the restoration process.
- Restoration: After approval of the specialist, our team will see you back for fabrication of your implant's connector and crown, the tooth shaped portion. A lab will fabricate these and as soon as our team receives your permanent restoration, we’ll have you come back in to make sure it fits perfectly and is made to Dr. Weedman’s specifications before attaching it to your dental implants. From this visit, you’ll be able to leave our office with a complete and functional smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants completely transform what it means to restore your smile. The whole-spectrum approach of this treatment allows you to regain a set of teeth that are just as functional as they are beautiful. With dental implants firmly anchoring your restorations in place, you won’t have to worry about them slipping or shifting when you eat or speak. The unique nature of the integration of your implants with your jawbone also allows them to last for decades with good oral hygiene and regular maintenance. These are just two of the countless advantages you’ll be able to enjoy by investing in this comprehensive answer to tooth loss.
Who Dental Implants Can Help

Dental implants can help patients who are missing one, a few, or an entire arch of teeth. So, if you are struggling with mild to severe tooth loss, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with us so we can explore your treatment options! In the meantime, you can read on to learn more, including the different types of dental implants that we offer at our office.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Generally, candidates for dental implants in Flagstaff:
- Have a strong jawbone
- Have healthy gums
- Are committed to taking good care of their smiles
- Are willing to break bad habits, like smoking
If you don’t initially meet this criteria, don’t worry – we may be able to provide the necessary preliminary care. For instance, if we find an infection in your gums during your exam, then we can provide gum disease treatment. Then, we can shift our focus to rebuilding your complete smile and strong bite.
Missing One Tooth

If you are missing a tooth, but the rest of your teeth are healthy, then we will likely recommend a single dental implant. After inserting the implant into your jawbone, we will wait for the two to fuse together (a process known as “osseointegration”). Then, we will create a custom dental crown and secure it on top with an abutment. At this point, the entire structure of your missing tooth will be restored!
Missing Multiple Teeth

If you are missing several teeth, then you actually have a few options. To start, if you are missing multiple teeth throughout your mouth, then we can create a partial denture and secure it in place with dental implants. Or, if you are missing a few teeth in a row, then we can fill the open space with an implant bridge. Unlike traditional dental bridges, none of your healthy teeth will be altered in the process.
Missing All Teeth

Finally, if you are missing all of your teeth, then we can give you a complete, confident smile again with implant dentures. If we decide together that this is the ideal option for you, then we will strategically place a few dental implants throughout the arch. Then, we will secure a custom denture on top, effectively restoring the visible portion of your teeth as well.
If you have any lingering questions for our team at Six Summits Dentistry, including which type of dental implant we recommend for you, then give us a call! The sooner you do, the sooner we can get a consultation on the calendar for you.
